Dad's First Stop After Naval Deployment Was to Son's School for Heartwarming Reunion

Share

Getting to go home to a family every night is a privilege, a privilege those who serve in the military overseas do not have.

Men and women in the service fight to protect our freedom and safety, while those of us at home enjoy those freedoms.

Sometimes we can take for granted just how blessed we are when it comes to our privileges. Which is why military family reunion videos are a good reminder of how much some folks give up.

Petty Officer Ben Fink of the United States Navy has been missing his family in North Carolina for almost a year.

I can hardly go a few days without seeing my children or husband, so a year is unfathomable to me. The fact that Petty Officer Fink spent a year in the Middle East makes me appreciate all that I get to enjoy each day.

When this husband and father finally got to come home to see his wife, daughter, and son, Benjamin, he knew he had to make the event a day to remember.

Along with the help of Weddington Middle School, Petty Officer Fink was able to pull off the surprise of the year, and just in time for Labor Day weekend!

Union County Public Schools captured the reunion of the father and son during a school assembly. The sixth grader’s reaction will melt your heart.

Watch as his dad appears on the basketball court. If I were Benjamin, I would have run straight into my dad’s arms too!

This would be a great video to show for a “Try Not to Cry” challenge. I would be the biggest loser in this case because I’m tearing up just thinking about it.

Benjamin’s mom, Amanda, and older sister, Sydney, were in on the entire thing. Spectrum News had a chance to interview the family before and after the big reveal.

“We enjoy being an active family, playing sports together, being outside,” Petty Officer Fink told Spectrum. “Really getting back into a family unit and enjoying them.”

Little Benjamin was missing big Ben tremendously. The video says it all. “When I saw my dad come out I was so happy,” Benjamin said.

And we are so happy for this sweet family! I’ll bet they have some big plans ahead of them, but Benjamin’s number one plan is to play his favorite video game, Fortnite, with his dad.
