Dead body found in cooler at MLB stadium

Share

A dead body was found in a walk-in beer cooler at SunTrust Park in Cobb Country, Georgia, according to multiple reports.

The Atlanta Braves, who play in SunTrust Park, are cooperating with officials.

Officer Sarah O’Hara of the Cobb County Police Department confirmed the male body was a third-party contractor and was found by another worker at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

Despite the investigation, the Braves still played their regularly scheduled 7:35 p.m. game against the Cincinnati Reds. Many fans were surprised to learn about a death being investigated in part of the stadium.

“Nobody inside really knew anything about it,” one fan told WSB-TV.

The final result of the game, a 5-3 win for the Reds, seemed almost trivial when some fans learned about the death of a worker.

“It’s sad because I’m sure he’s got a family somewhere,” a fan said.

O’Hara said the identity of the victim would not be released until the family was notified.

The police also noted that there was nothing particularly suspicious about what the worker was doing there. Police suggested that the worker had been there earlier in the day as part of an overnight shift.

“He was there just doing his job,” O’Hara noted.

O’Hara also declined to comment on the possibility of foul play.

“This is still an active investigation so I am unable to speculate whether or not foul play is a factor,” O’Hara said. Authorities are waiting for an autopsy report.

In addition to the cooperation of the Braves, the police also interviewed witnesses and co-workers.

“From there they’ll decide if it’s a homicide or accidental suicide. There’s many avenues it could go, but at this time, we’re just gathering information,” O’Hara said.

The Braves have thus far declined comment, according to CBS News, and have instead referred reporters to the official police statements regarding the matter.

The planned game for Wednesday, a 12:10 p.m. tilt with the Reds, still took place as scheduled.
