Eagles use rare fake play en route to touchdown

Their divisional matchup Saturday with the Atlanta Falcons couldn’t have started much worse for the Philadelphia Eagles. Running back Jay Ajayi fumbled on the second play of the game, and the Falcons recovered.

The Eagles defense held the Falcons to a field goal, keeping things tight through the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Philadelphia became the first team to find the end zone after a 14-play, 86-yard drive.

The running game powered the drive, with Ajayi picking up big chunks of yardage a handful of times.

The longest and most noteworthy play of the drive was a run, but it wasn’t by Ajayi.

Quarterback Nick Foles faked a pitch to Ajayi before quickly tucking an inside handoff to receiver Nelson Agholor. It was a unique play design that completely fooled the Falcons defense and allowed Agholor to pick up 21 yards and nearly score a touchdown.

NBC announcer Al Michaels called the play “one you don’t see very often.”

Four plays later, LeGarrette Blount ran into the end zone on fourth-and-1.

Kicker Jake Elliott missed the extra point.

The Falcons answered back with a touchdown of their own later in the quarter, a 6-yard pass from Matt Ryan to Devonta Freeman.

Elliott then kicked a 53-yard field go as time expired to make the score 10-9 Atlanta at halftime.
