Football Team Surprises Assistant Librarian Fighting Cancer with $2,000 Donation

Share

A little kindness goes a long way. In the case of one assistant librarian from Spanish Fort, Alabama, it was a football team that exuded kindness far beyond anything she ever expected.

Jane Leonard works in the library at Spanish Fort High School. She was recently diagnosed with cancer, news no one ever wants to hear.

Medical care isn’t cheap, and when it comes to cancer treatments, bills can stack up quickly. But Mrs. Leonard’s illness did not go unnoticed by her students.

You might not think football and books go together, but the football team at this high school did something special with the proceeds they earned from their spring intrasquad game ticket sales at $3 per ticket.

In a special ceremony, the team and their coach presented Mrs. Leonard with a $2,000 check. She was surprised and touched at once.

“We appreciate everything you do at our school and how you take care of our kids and all your hard work,” the team’s coach said.

The team posted a video of the touching surprise to Facebook. “Toros Football team showing some love to our library assistant, Mrs. Jane Leonard today…” the team wrote. “To say she was surprised is an understatement!”

Surprised is right! Her shock and gratitude are made clear in the video they shared. “I love you guys, thank you,” she said.

“This is what it’s all about,” she added. “We’re a community … I’m going to be fine, I’m going to be good, thanks to you guys.”

This is such a sweet gesture to show love and support for one of their own. No doubt Leonard is proud to call this school her home.

“THANK YOU,” the Baldwin County Public School district wrote on Facebook to express their gratitude. It’s clear they appreciate their assistant librarian too.

“Ms. Jane has worked here for a while,” coach Ben Blackmon said, according to AL.com. “She always greets you with a smile and a good, healthy, ‘Good morning, how are you doing?’ She’s always positive, always willing to help out doing odd tasks to help other people. We just thought it was a good opportunity to fight the fight with her and help her as much as we can.”

“If these boys can learn to give back to their community at an early age and to help people who are struggling, they will grow into young men who will continue to do that in the future,” he added.

What do you think about this team’s kind and selfless act? I’d say they ran a few extra yards to pull this one off. Could it be that books belong out on the field after all?
