Grandfather Makes Custom Halloween Costume for 5-Year-Old in Wheelchair
It’s the time of year when every kid likes to dress up. Girls don princess costumes and boys sport their favorite superhero uniforms.
We see Jedi Knights, hobbits, villains and dinosaurs. It seems like parents and their kids get more creative each year, coming up with unique ideas that are sure to win them a “Best Costume” prize.
One little boy from Prospect, Ohio, wanted to join in on the Halloween fun. But 5-year-old Blake Mompher is confined to a wheelchair, which could limit his costume choices.
Thankfully, Blake has a grandfather who thinks outside the box — or with a box, in this case. “We did a bulldozer (in 2016), one with the bucket in the front, and that was a big hit,” Blake’s mom, Megan Mompher, told CBS News.
This year’s costume is equally as awesome and just as fun as the boy inside it. According to Blake’s mom, “He loves his chair. He does all kinds of tricks in it and he does spins and wheelies and he’s just a really fun kid.”
Well, this really fun kid will be cruising in style this Oct. 31. Watch out, Prospect, Blake just got his bus-driving license.
After searching for some wheelchair costume ideas online, Mompher came up with possibly her best idea yet.
“He always loved school buses and watches his big sisters get on the bus every day,” Mompher told ABC News. “Next year, he gets to ride one to kindergarten so we felt a bus was perfect for Halloween!”
Photos and video of this 5-year-old on wheels have gone viral. It’s plain to see a lot of time, effort and heart were put into his new school bus costume.
Wow! Look at the detail on that bus! The smile on Blake’s face is worth more than words can express. He definitely seems like a kid full of joy.
“He’s just a boy who loves buses, trucks and all that good stuff,” Mompher told Fox 28. “We put it on his wheelchair and it comes to life for him.”
According to the Team Blake Facebook page, “Blake was born September 11, 2013 with spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and Chiari Malformation.”
The bio on his page goes on to state that “Blake is a perfect example of what FAITH is!” The featured cover photo even shows a Bible verse painted on his shoe.
The verse is Psalm 139:14, which says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
What a testament of faith, indeed! This family is a true example of what it means to have joy even in tough circumstances.
We hope Blake has the best time ever cruising his neighborhood in his new school bus costume. Way to go, Grandpa!
