Grandma Finds Mutilated Rat in Bag of Frozen Vegetables. Aldi Responds
Food is a delicate subject. It’s necessary, it can be artistic, and anything unsavory in it will instantly turn our stomachs.
Pat Bateman, of Liskeard, Cornwall, has five grandchildren. This 60-year-old grandma was trying to serve a healthy meal to her youngest granddaughter by including vegetables.
The 2-year-old ate the mixed vegetables with her lunch.Getting a 2-year-old to eat vegetables can be quite an accomplishment.
Instead of feeling proud, however, Bateman was soon horrified. The family had finished almost the entire bag of frozen mixed vegetables from Aldi.
A little bit was left over, so the grandma prepared to put it back in the freezer. Before doing so, she noticed something odd at the bottom of the bag.
The strange object was furry. It appeared to be half of a rat, but Bateman left it out to defrost to be sure.
“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I pulled it out…I showed my husband and because it was frozen we left it to defrost before taking another look at it,” Bateman told The Sun.
Bateman found the manager at her local Aldi to explain the situation. He offered her £30 (about $42) off her next Aldi purchase.
While she thought the manager was nice, she didn’t think he understood the seriousness of situation. She didn’t accept his offer and left.
She took pictures of the rat and sent them to Aldi’s head office. Bateman shared Aldi’s response to her with The Sun.
“I have had two offers for compensation after they assured me that there was no infestation where the veg was grown – but I don’t think £500 (about $700) is enough…We felt physically sick after finding the rat,” she explained.
Defrosting a mutilated rat is something you don’t read about every day! I cannot imagine how disgusted I would feel, especially knowing food my family and I ingested was from the same bag as the rat.
I mean, it’s one thing to find a dead animal in your food. It’s another to find part of a dead animal in your food after you’ve already eaten.
Isn’t there a joke about that? Something about whether it’s worse to find a whole worm or half of a worm in an apple? Gross.
They aren’t the first to complain about finding a piece of rodent in their frozen vegetable bag — a report revealed several other complaints from customers who found rodent pieces in the frozen mixed vegetable bags. According the The Mirror, Aldi has begun an investigation.
This particular product is no longer for sale. Fortunately, the family did not become sick after eating the frozen veggies, but the story is still horrifying readers.
