It’s not often that an obituary contains highly personal material which sends a strong social message out into the world. But with the bloom of social media, this possibility is becoming reality.

The family of Sadie Riggs, a 15-year-old from Bedford, Pennsylvania felt this needed to be done in this circumstance. They were not going to let it “slip by.”

Their loving Sadie died on June 19, 2017. The hard-hitting document starts by boldly stating she “took her own life.”

The family wanted everyone to know why. They would not be stopped from getting the message out.

Once you read the obituary, you’ll understand why it has quickly gone viral.  It’s something everyone should read and share if they have kids…

Miss Sadie L. Riggs, 15, of Bedford, took her own life on Monday, June 19th, 2017. The obituary continued with personal insight into Sadie’s struggles and the family’s greatest wish following her death.

In an effort to debunk the rumors about Sadie’s death we would like to share this information. Yes, Sadie took her own life, she hung herself.

It is hard to fathom that someone so young could be so troubled. Sadie was seeking help, she was in counseling and taking medication, but it was all too much for such a young soul to live with.

If you take a minute and look at Sadie’s family dynamics you will see that a large percent of the people in her life were not related to her by blood but she was sent to us by God who knew this child needed a family. Sadie had a tough life and until a recent incident at school, she handled everything life served her.

For a young lady so excited about going to the High School things sure went terribly wrong for her. For the bullies involved, please know you were effective in making her feel worthless.

That is all between you and God now, but please know that it is not too late to change your ways. Sadie’s death has taken us to dark places, we will stick together and protect one another as we try to make sense of this tragic loss.

To all the bullies out there, I just want you to know that as much as we despise your actions never, ever do we wish for you to feel the paralyzing pain that engulfs our bodies, a pain so severe that it makes the simple act of breathing difficult or the guilt that leaves us wondering what we could have done differently-or that struggle to remember the last words we spoke…Our hearts are beyond broken.

Sadie, it was a privilege to have you in our lives and we will always love you. May you find peace in the arms of God and may we all be kind to one another.

In lieu of flowers, the family of Sadie ask that you be kind to one another.

How gut-wrenching it must have been for the family to put this together. How difficult it must have been to know they would not have Sadie among them and that others out there were responsible for her drastic measures.

Bullying is the use of force or coercion to abuse. It’s an attempt to dominate someone and those responsible should have to answer for their actions.

It doesn’t always have to be physical. It can involve attacks related to a variety of topics including race, appearance, religion and social class among others.

Bullying can be done by individuals or with the “power of the pack” as well. When it’s habitual, it begins to take a heavy toll.

Some handle it and some do not, but the point is, no one should have to. It would not be a bad idea to utilize this example in teaching people about the power of bullying and how devastating it can be.

Sadie’s family giving her suicide a voice could have been a way to cope. It’s definitely a way to assist others so as to prevent this type of thing from happening to them.

It is a way to give meaning to Sadie’s suffering. It is a way to have an impact and make a difference.

Prayers for the family. We can honor their wishes by being kind to one another.
