Heartbreaking: Desperate Hail Mary Attempt Comes Within Inches of Glory
After the New England Patriots took a 38-24 lead over the Bears on a two-yard pass from Tom Brady to James White with 8:40 left in the fourth quarter on Sunday, it looked to be over at Chicago’s Soldier Field.
This is the Pats, after all — they just don’t blow 14-point leads in the fourth quarter very often.
But then things got crazy over the last few minutes of the game and the Bears came within inches of completing a Hail Mary as time expired to potentially tie or even win the game.

After Kyle Fuller intercepted Brady with 6:30 left, Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky hit tight end Trey Burton on an 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 38-31 with 4:13 left.
The Pats, however, were able to run down the clock to 30 seconds after pounding the ball on the ground and picking up two first downs. After a punt that put the Bears at their own 20, Trubisky had 24 seconds and no timeouts to get the tying touchdown.
A 14-yard pass over the middle to Anthony Miller followed by a spike put the ball on the Bears 34 with 9 ticks left. Short sideline completions to Tarik Cohen (3 yards) and Taylor Gabriel (8 yards) put the ball on the Chicago 45 with 2 seconds left.
Hail Mary time. Trubisky got chased around the pocket and had linebacker Kyle Van Noy in his grill as he let it fly.
Miraculously, Bears wide receiver Kevin White caught it at the one yard line, surrounded by a sea of Patriots. He pivoted toward the goal and everyone thought he was going to reach the ball across the goal line for the touchdown.

But Pats safety Duron Harmon stepped up and stopped White in his tracks, while safety Jason McCourty grabbed him from behind to keep him out of the end zone.
“That was scary,” said Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore, reported the Boston Herald.
“Crazy,” Harmon added.
White thought for a brief moment that he could extend across the goal line, which would have set the Bears up for a game-tying point after, or even a winning two-point conversion.
“For a second I did, until I felt a bunch of guys, then I kind of knew it was over,” White said, reported the Chicago Sun-Times. “But I just tried to stretch the ball, and I actually tried to hand it to Taylor [Gabriel], but there was no time left.”
The Pats improved to 5-2, while the Bears fell to 3-3.
