Husband Washes Ring Every Day To Remind Himself of What's Important in His Marriage
Remember that old line from the 1987 film “The Princess Bride“? “This is true love. Do you think this happens every day?”
Westley’s question to Buttercup made our pulses patter and our hearts melt. But then the movie ended and the credits started to roll, leaving us with a defeating sense of reality.
The story, after all, is a fairy tale. A fantasy. Make believe. Could a love like Westley and Buttercup’s come true?
Divorce rate statistics can be discouraging, to say the least. But we can find examples of true love and commitment if we only take time to look.
Take Jeff Hardy, for example. The dad and husband from Oklahoma shared a deeply personal post on Facebook that has gone viral.
“So this morning I was cleaning my wedding ring, I do it about once a week or so,” Hardy begins. “…I got to thinking about how cleaning my wedding ring kind of symbolizes a healthy marriage for me.”
Hardy goes on to talk about his wife, Sydney, and how it was important to him as her husband to wash his ring.
“My hands stay constantly banged up and dirty,” he writes. Still, he washes his ring, despite the fact some friends have basically asked him, “What’s the point?”
Hardy’s response is priceless. “IT. DOES. MATTER,” he says. “Why? Because every time I clean it, it reminds me of the small things in our marriage I should be doing.”
The man talks about really taking time to love and listen, to show his wife how much she means to him even in the simple everyday moments.
“Every day I wake to my wife, I pretend she is a stranger that I am madly in love with and think, ‘How today can I make her fall in love with me?'”
Mrs. Hardy certainly married a good man. Her husband is one of many good men out there who look at marriage this way.
His advice is good for both husbands and wives, a sweet and encouraging reminder that, as Jeff says, “the small things matter.”
They do, indeed. Thank you for sharing your heart, Mr. Hardy. This post is as beautiful as it is uplifting, an inspiration to all significant others out there.
