Johnny Manziel has returned to the football field
The rehabilitation of “Johnny Football” continues.
Former Heisman winner Johnny Manziel is continuing to take steps to rebuild his image and earn another shot at the NFL.
On Thursday morning, the former Texas A&M star served as the quarterback at the University of San Diego’s pro day, where Toreros players had the chance to show off their skills prior to next month’s NFL draft.
It was the first time pro scouts were able to see the former Cleveland Browns burnout throw in person since he was released from the team in March 2016 due to a string of off-the field issues.
In his 15 games with the Browns, Manziel was decidedly mediocre, throwing seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. The team won only two of his eight NFL starts.
More recently, Manziel has been training with quarterback coach George Whitfield, who lists Cam Newton among his students.
Manziel was approached by San Diego coaches because they didn’t have a quarterback available to throw, according to Sports Illustrated.
“They asked if they could include him in pro day,” Ben Brunnschweiler, USD’s director of football operations, told USA Today. “It’s USD’s pro day, so the purpose is to showcase our players for the scouts.”
During Thursday’s pro day, Manziel threw passes of all distances, as evidenced by video footage taken at the scene.
Representatives from 12 teams — including the Browns — were scheduled to attend the pro day, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, most were impressed by what they saw from Manziel.
It’s always tough to evaluate players at pro days, particularly quarterbacks, because their workouts are usually scripted.
The good news for Manziel is that he showed up and seemed to impress the scouts.
