Left-on-Left Crime: Bernie Sanders Rally Triggers Claims of Cultural Appropriation
The latest example of the left caving in on itself comes courtesy of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign.
This time, some leftists criticized the Vermont independent and avowed democratic socialist after a reggae group with some white band members opened for his campaign rally in Brooklyn on Saturday, according to Townhall.
Since reggae music originated from Jamaica, some people took offense at the opening act, which they saw as an example of cultural appropriation.
The Twitter uproar appears to have started after HuffPost reporter Daniel Marans, who was covering the rally, described the opening act on Twitter as a “white reggae band.”
It didn’t take long for people to criticize Sanders as a result:
WARNING: One of the following tweets contains vulgar language that some viewers may find offensive.
You don’t come to my state, with a white reggae band, of all places Brooklyn, where the west Indian day parade take place every year, where we celebrate the west Indian culture. If you took this as a shot at the band, you’re use to defending whiteness. Bernie gentrified rally. https://t.co/RvCZRPTvqt

Nothing says I respect black folks like bringing in a white Reggae band! It’s as thoughtful as an old white man talking over an historic moment like a black women delivering the Democrat’s SOTU rebuttal.

😂 Brooklyn has the largest West Indian population outside of the Caribbean. And this is the reggae band chosen to kick off this rally- unbelievable.

Holy shit! You can’t make this crap up. A WHITE reggae band. 🤦🏻♂️ #BernieInBrooklyn https://t.co/t8QYArCT5s

Bernie 2020 in a nutshell: A “reggae band” made up of mostly white dudes and one Black guy holding a zblack guitar #outreach.
Is this your King? We know Bernadict ain’t listening to reggae. He listens to his own speeches on rotation. Cc: @MikeNJD https://t.co/jysJboxVIC

Nothing says Bernie Sanders like a, white reggae band playing in the Brooklyn the gentrification capital of the world. https://t.co/8Gxx3ZI95z

Only criticism is the questionable use of a white reggae band in the middle of a Caribbean neighborhood and so many white mail staffers that I met. We should do better this time around #BernieInBrooklyn pic.twitter.com/kzPTVaG8L8

As several Twitter users later pointed out, not all the band’s members were white. It was actually a mixed-race group of musicians.
I figured someone would say this. But there were actually two black guys playing in the “white” reggae band. Maybe it is a multi-cultural band? pic.twitter.com/i0E6Gi4WmJ

Leave it to liberal Democrats to make black and white people playing together into a problem

Marans later deleted his “white reggae band” tweet and thanked another user for letting him know that “the band was multiracial.”
I already apologized, but I’ve now decided to delete the tweet with the viral video of what I described as a “white” reggae band opening for Bernie. Thank you to @Wade_Turnbull for bringing it to my attention that the band was multiracial. https://t.co/EHQWhO6b52

But this instance highlights the absurdity of the left’s obsession with political correctness, particularly in regard to race. It shouldn’t matter one bit whether a reggae band is composed of white musicians, black musicians or a mixture of both.
But even the very suggestion that a “white reggae band” was opening for Sanders’ rally was enough make liberals pounce. It would appear that not even a “woke” leftist idol like Sanders is safe from liberals’ obsession with perceived microaggressions.
It remains to be seen how many more microaggressions the left will accuse Sanders of committing while his campaign progresses.
Whatever happens, it seems inevitable that the 2020 campaign cycle will see liberals compete against each other over who can virtue signal the loudest.
