Loyal Dog Shot by Intruders While Protecting Family of 5 from Masked Gunmen
According to KPRC, a family in the Lone Star State’s most populous city experienced a terrifying crime on May 24. Four men forced their way into a suburban home in Houston, Texas, breaking in through a back door.
Home invasions are always terrifying. But this one must have seemed particularly frightening for the family’s father, who was in the room adjacent to the area into which the criminals forced themselves.
It was 1 a.m., but soon enough the entire household and the neighborhood at large found itself awake and in an uproar. KNPX reported that the interlopers pinned the dad down and held him at gunpoint in the kitchen.
The rest of the family — a mother and three children — streamed out into the home’s common areas, wondering what was going on. The invaders brandished their weapons, ordering them back into their rooms.
Then the criminals began to rob the house. But the family decided not to take the violation of their personal space lying down.
The family dog raced to its owners’ aid. It charged at the robbers, ready to bite.
But one of the gun-wielding invaders quickly opened fire on the dutiful pooch. The bullets struck the dog twice.
Around the same time, a teenage family member escaped through a window. According to KNPX, the 17-year-old ran to the next door neighbor’s home, trying to get help.
The robbers soon noticed. In fact, the teen’s absence must have alarmed the criminals, and they fled the scene.
The dad then decided to make his move. He jumped up, grabbed a firearm he had secreted away, and ran after them.
By that time, though, the criminals were far away. “It’s a good situation out of a bad situation, the best could have happened,” family friend Khari Anderson said, according to KNPX.
The dad later found his wallet dropped on the pavement outside of his home. Anderson hoped that no one else would try such a robbery anytime soon, saying, “You’re not going to get rich quick, robbing people like this. Something is going to happen. You’re going to get shot, or you’re going to be in jail.”
UPDATE: here’s the family’s dog, bandaged up, but she’s okay. “Everybody is OK,” Anderson said. “But hopefully they find whoever did that.”
Amazingly, that “everybody” includes the family dog. Despite being shot twice, the pooch’s veterinarian expects it to make a full recovery. After receiving emergency care, dog is now back home with its family.
