Man Floored After Discovering Mother's Body Was Used for Military Blast Testing
A man thought his mother’s unique brain would help scientists unravel the secrets of Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, he discovered her body was used as part of an ultra-destructive blast test conducted by the U.S. military.
Jim Stauffer said doctors originally were perplexed by his mother’s condition.
As Arizona’s KNXV-TV reports, Doris Stauffer had Alzheimer’s yet didn’t carry the gene for the disease. Doctors hoped to look inside her brain for any mutations or conditions that might have triggered these circumstances.
After Doris’ death, however, her doctor was unable to take the body.
Still not wanting his mother’s suffering to be in vain, Stauffer began contacting other agencies. Less than an hour later, Biological Resource Center came for his mother’s body.
“There was paperwork signed stating what was and what was not to happen with her body,” Stauffer said. He would later receive a box containing some of his mother’s ashes.
But Stauffer’s world turned upside-down when a reporter contacted him.
The reporter had evidence that Doris Stauffer’s body had not been used to unlock the secrets of the human mind, but instead was tied to a frame and blasted with explosives. The test was part of a U.S. Army experiment.
“She was then supposedly strapped in a chair on some sort of apparatus,” Stauffer said. “And a detonation took place underneath her to basically kind of get an idea of what the human body goes through when a vehicle is hit by an IED.”
To anyone who is even remotely familiar with what an IED blast is like, its effects on the human body are clear. Shrapnel, blast force and massive heat all combine to devastate soft targets.
As horrific of a fate as this was, Stauffer said it should have never happened at all.
“There was actually wording on this paperwork about performing this stuff,” he said. “Performing these medical tests that may involve explosions, and we said no. We checked the ‘no’ box on all that.”
A civil suit against Biological Resource Center and its owner over their practices is ongoing.
Although Jim Stauffer will never be able to forget what happened to his mother’s body, he is determined to push forward and ensure that justice is served.
