Man Takes 10-Year-Old Dog with Terminal Cancer on Cross-Country Trip for Final Adventure
To say one dog from Attleboro, Massachusetts, is her man’s best friend is an understatement. What Mayor Paul Heroux has done for his Japanese wolf-dog Mura can only be described as an act of true love.
Mura is 10 years old and has sadly been diagnosed with terminal cancer. “I’d be surprised if she makes it a year,” Heroux told CBS News.
This faithful canine’s reach has gone far beyond her master. She’s visited retirement homes with him and has even been featured in his campaigns.
“She’s my best friend,” Heroux said. “She’s been with me at the best and worst parts of my life.” While Mura’s cancer is definitely one of the worst parts, Heroux has tried to focus on the best.
It is appropriate this mayor’s last name is pronounced “hero,” for he has acted like a true hero and friend to this sweet dog.
In an effort to take one more memorable adventure with the “first dog” of Attleboro, Heroux decided a little cross-country excursion was in order.
The pair traveled 8,500 miles from Massachusetts to California. Heroux documented the adventure on his Facebook page in November 2018. Their journey has since gone viral.
“She was just happy to go anywhere we were going because she was going with me,” Heroux told CBS News.
Followers and commenters kept up with the duo’s trip, offering guesses as to where the two might end up next.
The truth is, this pup has become quite the celebrity. From Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon and beyond, Mura has pretty much seen it all.
The pair has made it back home now, but their memories of this special trip together will live on through photos and videos.
As for Mura, it appears she’s happy to be back where she belongs. “Mura started the day in Missouri 1300 miles away but finished it in her own bed in Attleboro. The end,” Heroux wrote on Nov. 9.
If you’d like to keep with how Mura is doing, you can follow Heroux on Facebook where the mayor regularly posts updates. He also plans to campaign for mayor again during the next election season.
