Obit for the Ages: Daughter's Hilarious Take on Dad's Death Is Going Viral
An Indiana man’s obituary has gone viral for its honest wit and story-telling about the “baddest-a**” man on the planet.
Ward’s daughter, Jean Lahm, wrote the obituary which is now posted on the Gesin Funeral Homes page.
From his quirks to his love-hate relationship with hummus, the obituary has people around the world wishing they knew Terry Ward.
According to Lahm, Ward left behind behind “32 jars of Miracle Whip, 17 boxes of Hamburger Helper and multitudes of other random items that would prove helpful in the event of a zombie apocalypse.”
And some things that were not quite Ward’s to keep — strictl speaking, anyway.
The obituary notes that he was a telephone company lineman who “accumulated roughly 3,000 rolls of black electrical tape during the course of his career (which he used for everything from open wounds to “Don’t use this button” covers).”
Some things Ward loved including discussions on the best pizza maker, hunting and fishing.
“He didn’t give a d**** about most material things,” the obituary stated.
“He never owned a personal cell phone and he had zero working knowledge of the Kardashians,” Lahm wrote.
Lahm spoke with TODAY to explain why she decided to write a long, realistic, piece about her dad that showcased his quirks and love for life.
“That’s how my dad was,” Lahm said.
“He was all about making people laugh. He just had this quirky, witty sense of humor and we all got it from him. The household was built on who could get the best laugh,” she continued.
According to The Chicago Tribune, Lahm’s personal tribute to her father didn’t end after the obituary was posted.
The funeral services were jam-packed with stories about Ward and his quick sense of humor.
“You better believe a few of us tilted back a Heineken in his memory,” Lahm said of the services.
CNN, The Washington Post, and other various media outlets have picked up the story to share Ward’s life story with the world.
The online guestbook has more than 1,300 signatures.
One woman wrote “You are obviously blessed to have had this man in your life. Never knew him. Wish I had.”
Rest in peace, Terry Ward.
