Media Outlet's Attempt To Attack Trump over His Congratulations to USWNT Backfires
USA Today attempted to attack President Donald Trump over his congratulatory tweet to the U.S. women’s soccer team for winning the World Cup.
It did not go well.
After the U.S. women beat the Netherlands 2-0 on Sunday, the president tweeted, “Congratulations to the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team on winning the World Cup! Great and exciting play. America is proud of you all!”

This was not good enough for USA Today, however.
It published a snarky article Sunday headlined, “Donald Trump waited 2 hours to congratulate the USWNT on its World Cup title.”
Written by Andrew Joseph, the article recounted U.S. star Megan Rapinoe’s anti-Trump rhetoric and demonstrations, which included protesting the national anthem at the World Cup as an “F you” to the president and declaring she would not go to “the f—ing White House” if the team won.
Joseph noted that former President Barack Obama posted a congratulations tweet at 1:20 p.m. Eastern time, while Trump’s tweet came at 3:11 p.m.

“It took two hours for Trump’s Twitter account to acknowledge that the U.S. women had won the World Cup,” Joseph wrote.
“The win in this feud clearly went to Rapinoe,” he said. “After all, the silence spoke volumes.”

Ultimately, both presidents were happy to see the American team win the World Cup, and Joseph was really reaching to try to turn it into an anti-Trump story — a fact not lost on USA Today’s readers.
They ripped the ridiculous article in their responses on Facebook.
The top comment on the post came from Charles Reeder, who wrote, “Oh my God. Well…. I didn’t congratulate them at all. Not gonna. Could care less. So there’s that…. And here’s this, TRUMP 2020.”
Mike Sarvela added, “This is pretty petty. Stop posting BS articles meant to divide. This day belongs to the victorious US ladies.”
“Wow, that’s a whole lot of manufactured outrage you got there,” Brian Jurgella wrote.
Theresa Catalano Fiumefreddo argued the publication was trying to conjure up anything it could to rip Trump. “And if he congratulated within 10 seconds someone would say wow he’s worried about soccer instead of the country,” she wrote. “Someone always has something to say.”
George Milligan may have put it best when he wrote, “He’s only the president of the united states. He can’t be that busy right…”
Milligan is spot on.
Trump is the most powerful man on earth. He has a job with a lot of responsibilities. Had he tweeted it right away, he likely would have caught flak from the left for wasting his time watching a soccer game rather than doing his job.
Meanwhile, Obama is a private citizen. Surely, he has more time on his hands now than he did when he was still in office three years ago.
USA Today might want to come up with something more substantial the next time it writes a hit piece on Trump.
