Months Before His Death, Robin Williams Helped Nervous Teen Ask Dream Girl to Prom
When Robin Williams passed away in 2014, it was heartbreaking news for fans everywhere. Since his death, stories of the man he was continue to pay tribute to his memory.
He was well known for his comedic roles such as Mrs. Doubtfire and the Genie in Disney’s “Aladdin.” His voice remains iconic and recognizable even years after his passing.
“Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” would be Williams’ final live action role, premiering in theaters only months after his death.
Co-stars in the film carry positive memories of Williams. Skyler Gisondo, who played Ben Stiller’s son Nick Daley in the film, has a particularly fond memory of his time on set.
At the time, Gisondo was a high school senior. Because of his role and commitment to acting, the young man’s senior year was not that of a typical 17-year-old.
According to a 2014 article from The Hollywood Reporter, Gisondo didn’t have the chance to ask a girl to prom like the rest of his friends because he wasn’t home.
But he wasn’t going to let that stop him from taking a date to his senior prom. Gisondo decided to get his co-stars involved and they were more than up to the task.
“All morning, Robin was pitching more ideas. He was saying ‘Can I say this? Would it be appropriate to say this?'” Gisondo told The Hollywood Reporter. “You’re Robin Williams. You can say whatever you want!”
The YouTube video Gisondo, Williams, and Stiller put together is quite something. This may just be the most epic “promposal” in history — and these “Night at the Museum” stars know their history.
“It turned into this three-minute, ridiculous thing…” Gisondo said. “I realized that was the most awesome three minutes of my life…”
Watch as Gisondo asks a girl named Hilary to the prom. I’ll bet every girl in that high school wished she were Hilary after watching this video.
Williams is true to himself and truly hilarious. He and Stiller assure Gisondo’s potential date that he’s a “great kisser,” assuring the girl they don’t know this from personal experience.
The best part might just be when Williams calls for “dancers” and swaggers off camera saying, “Sell the dress! Sell the dress!” Hilary said, “yes” in case that wasn’t clear.
“Robin was this bottomless reservoir of kindness and hilarity,” Gisondo shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
True words indeed. This video just serves as a reminder of how much Williams is truly missed. He will always be a light on screen and a memory in our hearts.
