Nike Cashes in on 'Sacrifice' with Controversial New Kaepernick Shirt That Immediately Sells Out

Share

What are people thinking? Memories must be very short among those who love to buy athletic shoes and apparel.

It seems Colin Kaepernick has more sway in promoting social justice than we thought. And Nike is making some big money using Kaepernick and his message.

This may be evidenced by the latest release of sports apparel brandishing the Kaepernick name and slogan “Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything” because it has sold out just hours after its release by the sportswear giant.

It must be a reaffirming boost to the ego to know there are so many people still willing to support the Kaepernick message — to the tune of $50 a piece for the long sleeve t-shirts.

The Hill reported the shirts were released on Thursday.

“The release comes a month after the company captured headlines for the announcement of their endorsement deal with the athlete-turned-activist,” reported The Hill.

In September, CNBC reported a huge dip in Nike stock after they signed Kaepernick to a new ad campaign: “Nike shares fell Tuesday after the reveal of a new ad campaign for the 30th anniversary of ‘Just Do It,’ featuring former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, pulled a wave of responses, both for and against the marketing materials, on social media.

Have you boycotted Nike since they hired Colin Kaepernick as a spokesman?

“The stock closed the day down roughly 3.2 percent, as #NikeBoycott was trending on Twitter.”

But it appears enough time has passed and the negative headlines about Nike and Kaepernick have subsided. Nike has rebounded.

“Share prices for the company performed at an all-time high last month after the company’s stock initially fell more than 3 percent following the announcement of the deal,” reported The Hill.

And Kaepernick hasn’t suffered from his “sacrifice” much either.

His net worth is estimated at $20 million dollars, but that’s just a rough estimate according to Money. He’s still working out some fine points with his deal with the 49ers and there is the question of just how much Nike is actually paying him to be their spokesman.

“The estimated net worth of the former NFL quarterback is estimated to be $20 million, but this is something that cannot be completely verified due to the complexity of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers. There are multiple performance and player clauses in every team contract, so the exact amount of money a player is paid at the end of the year gets a but fuzzy,” Money reported.

He is also currently suing the NFL for colluding to keep him off the field as reported in August by the New York Times.

“In a major blow to the N.F.L., Colin Kaepernick achieved a preliminary but important win in his case accusing the league of colluding to keep him off the field because of the player protests during the national anthem that he instigated.”

As his legal case advances and his fortune increases from his Nike endorsement, you have to wonder: Just how much will Kaepernick go out on a limb to throw some financial support to his social justice warrior causes? Or is he just using his momentum to make the big bucks?

Either way you’ve got to hand it to him. He has played it smart and he certainly doesn’t appear to be hurting too much from his “sacrifice.”
