Proud Owner Films Moment Dopey Great Dane Finally Fetches Paper
Have you ever tried to accomplish something, with spectacularly second-rate results? Fortunately, most folks understand what it feels like to fail occasionally.
American automaker Henry Ford even coined a phrase about it. “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently,” he said.
Hopefully, Ellie the Great Dane is paying attention to these time-tested words. A recent Rumble video suggests she may still need to polish up her “fetch” routine.
But her initial practice session is certainly entertaining to watch. The hilarious hit-or-miss attempt was recently posted to the Rumble account MaxandKatietheGreatDanes, with additional photos on a Facebook page that shares the same name.
The American Kennel Club notes that this breed is typically very friendly, dependable and patient. That last trait clearly applies to Ellie’s easygoing owner, too.
As the video snippet clearly demonstrates, Ellie just can’t seem to focus on retrieving her human’s newspaper. There it sits on the driveway, waiting for Ellie to even notice its existence.
Ellie has tried to fetch the paper before, but her owner is hoping that this next attempt won’t end up in a shredded newspaper.
Things start out in a promising fashion. An oversized Ellie lopes slowly in the paper’s general direction.
“Ellie, where’s the paper? Go get the paper,” her owner’s voice says encouragingly.
So Ellie stoops down to sniff her target for one quick second. Then a group of bicyclists speeds down the street, and she feels compelled to issue a warning bark.
Meanwhile, the newspaper continues to sit there silently. But at this point, Ellie can’t even be bothered.
She trots over into the yard, glancing around randomly. “Ellie, you forgot the paper,” her owner says again.
Eventually, Ellie ambles back. In a helpful bid to hurry things up, her owner actually places the plastic-wrapped “Tampa Bay Times” in her mouth.
“Take it back toward the house,” her owner says. Unfortunately, Ellie still wants to keep savoring the sunshine.
So she drops the paper onto the pavement and simply stands there. Her supportive human strolls over and hands it right back to her.
This back-and-forth interaction continues for several minutes. Ultimately, Ellie’s owner decides to basically hold the paper and walk toward the front door, while Ellie chews on it.
But once she’s a few yards away, the clever canine finally manages to figure things out on her own. Ellie trots toward the entrance with the paper in tow, so her tolerant human can enjoy a morning cup of coffee.
It just goes to show that with enough good-natured persistence, almost anything is possible. And if you’re a diligent dog named Ellie, you get to play with your favorite stuffed parrot as a reward.
