Package Thief Returns to Scene of Crime with Apology Note for Homeowners
Remember the days when you could leave your keys in the ignition and your front door unlocked, even when you weren’t at home?
The era of trusting your neighbors seems like a far-off memory now. Even areas that appear safe and secure have their problems.
I personally live in an area that’s very “family friendly,” yet I had my license plate stolen right off my car in front of my home.
Sadly, it seems there are few people who are trustworthy in this day and age. I won’t even open my door for the UPS man for fear of an intruder wanting to get into my home.
But a remorseful thief in Florida is restoring some of my faith in humanity. The “porch pirate” was caught on camera outside a home in Kissimmee, Inside Edition reported.
The young man can be seen walking up to the door, then hurrying away with two smaller packages. He left the larger packages, probably because they were too large to run away with easily.
The owner of the home was baffled. “You would think, ‘Oh I shouldn’t steal from this house especially because they have a camera right at me,’” Franklin Fermin told Fox 35.
As the young man was reportedly drinking, he obviously wasn’t in a state in which he used his best judgement.
After the packages were reported stolen, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office shared photos from the footage on social media.
There is speculation that the only reason the packages were eventually returned was because the thief feared the consequences after his photos were posted.
Still, the letter he wrote when he returned the packages seems remorseful and sincere. The letter was included with a large paper bag that contained some of the stolen items, which were set on Fermin’s porch.
“I know no apologies could make up for what I did. I did not go to your house with the intentions to steal,” the letter read.
“I have never done anything like this in my life,” the apology continued. “I come from a good family and good morals and it’s eating me inside knowing what I did.”
Despite the thief’s sudden change of heart and decision to do the right thing, police are still asking the suspect to turn himself in.
According to Fox 35, not every item was returned. “If he was really sorry he should like return all of the packages instead of some of them,” Fermin told the news station.
“I understand people make mistakes,” Major Jacob Ruiz told Inside Edition. Hopefully the thief turns himself in and the rest of the missing items are returned.
If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are encouraged to get in touch with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
