Palace Confirms: Ailing 96-Year-Old Prince Philip Admitted to Hospital

Share

Just weeks before the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Buckingham Palance has confirmed that Prince Philip has been hospitalized.

The 96-year-old missed Easter services alongside Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle on Sunday.

He also missed the traditional Maundy service held on Thursday of last week.

A royal source stated to People that he’d missed the Maundy service due to issues with his hip.

Philip officially retired from his royal duties and public life last year. However, he was still anticipated to appear alongside his wife of 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II, at public events.

The palace released a statement that said, “His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London this afternoon, for planned surgery on his hip which will take place tomorrow.”

The concern is due to his overall ailing health and risks of general anesthetics for the royal, who is turning 97 in June.

Prince Philip has also been hospitalized in the past for a heart condition that required minor surgery in 2011.

He is still expected to attend Harry and Meghan’s wedding on May 19, should the surgery go without complications.

The palace also noted that “further updates will be issued when appropriate.”

Our thoughts are with Prince Philip during his surgery, and we are wishing him a speedy recovery.
