Patriots Reportedly File Tampering Charges Against Texans, NFL Expected To Investigate
The Houston Texas have been accused of tampering in their effort to land New England Patriots director of personnel Nick Caserio.
The Patriots filed tampering charges with the league against the Texans over the matter, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday, citing information from league sources. The NFL had not confirmed the report.
“The league now is expected to gather relevant information to open its investigation against Houston,” Schefter said.

The tampering charges are centered around the Texans’ attempts to hire Caserio as their general manager. They fired GM Brian Gaine on Friday.
“After a thorough evaluation of our football operations, we have decided to relieve Brian Gaine of his duties as general manager,” Cal McNair, chairman and CEO of the Texans, said in a statement last week. “Brian is a man of high character and we appreciate his contributions to our organization. We will begin an immediate search for a new GM.
“In the interim, Football Operations will be led by Senior Vice President of Football Administration Chris Olsen. While the timing may be unusual, this decision was made in the best interest of our organization in our quest to build a championship team for the City of Houston.”
Gaine had only been on the job for one year. The Texans finished 11-5 last season and won the AFC South.
The night before Gaine was fired, Patriots owner Robert Kraft invited players and coaches to his house to give out the rings from winning Super Bowl LIII, which New England won 13-3 over the Los Angeles Rams.
Schefter reported that Jack Easterby, former Patriots director of team development and character coach and current Texans executive vice president of team development, was at that party — as was Caserio.
Easterby and Caserio are “represented by the same agent, Bob LaMonte,” the report said.
The Texans have asked for permission to interview Caserio for their GM job, Schefter wrote, but sources told him that they had not yet been granted permission to do so.

The NFL defines tampering as “any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissibly induce a person to seek employment with that club or with the NFL.”
Caserio, 43, has been with the Patriots since 2001. He has been the director of player personnel since 2008.
