Pete Carroll claiming door still open for Colin Kaepernick with Seahawks
Russell Wilson is one of the best scramblers in all of the NFL.
But, as it turns out, he has nothing on his head coach.
Last week, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Colin Kaepernick’s tryout with the Seahawks was canceled after the unemployed quarterback refused to say he’d stop kneeling during the national anthem.
Seattle signed former Colts and Jaguars quarterback Stephen Morris, and that was that.
Or not.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll appeared on radio station KJR-AM on Thursday and sang a different tune.
The Super Bowl-winning coach said simply, “The discussion and the opportunity is still open.”
What?
Regarding the Seahawks’ plans, Carroll said, “We’re just trying to figure out what’s best for us.”
When the hosts asked about Kaepernick’s political stance, the outspoken coach replied he “was not going there.”
Seattle is expected to be rebuilding after losing numerous stalwarts, including Richard Sherman, Michael Bennett, Sheldon Richardson and Jimmy Graham.
The Seahawks’ run as a perennial Super Bowl contender seems to be over.
Sure, there’s a superstar at quarterback in Wilson, but other than that there are holes throughout the squad and roster spots are up for grabs, starting with the backup quarterback.
“That’s just one area we’re trying to work on,” Carroll said. “There’s a number of them, and we’re just trying to get better. It’s about the competition thing right now and figure out what’s best for us.”
The Seahawks may have heavy competition this summer, but if they want to sign Kaepernick, it sure seems like a one-team race.
