A Ferrari driven by 71-year-old Mark Gibello — with Haas as a passenger — reportedly sideswiped Wilson’s BMW at about 6:30 p.m.
Gibello was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jay Haas, the golfer’s father, told the Golf Channel that his son escaped serious injuries; he has no broken bones but does have pain and swelling in his legs.
“Bill was very fortunate,” his father said.
Haas’ agent, Allen Hobbs, said in a statement: “Last night in Pacific Palisades, California, Bill Haas was involved in a serious car accident in which the driver — a member of the family with whom Haas and his family were staying for the Genesis Open — was killed. While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and — more importantly — his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time.”
The Los Angeles Police Department said Wilson’s car was the third in the crash, and the actor avoided serious injury.
Detective Jeff Fischer told KTLA-TV that Wilson was basically in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“His vehicle basically just got clipped by the Ferrari,” Fischer said.
KTLA said the injured included a 50-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man.
The golf world was quick to offer support for Haas.

Haas is a six-time winner on the PGA Tour whose career highlight was winning the 2011 Tour Championship.
But on Wednesday, nobody was thinking about that.
“Bill will withdraw from the Genesis Open and plans to head home to Greenville [North Carolina] to recover,” Hobbs said. “He appreciates the support of friends, family and the golf world as a whole, and he has asked for privacy as he processes what has happened.”
The Genesis Open tees off at Riviera Country Club on Thursday. The big news on the course will be the second tournament in Tiger Woods’ comeback, but everybody’s thoughts and prayers will be about what happened Tuesday night.
