Pharmacist Delivers Medicine to Snowed-In Customers on Snowmobile

Share

Recently, the American Midwest experienced a deep freeze unlike anything seen in a generation. Ordinary citizens across multiple states hunkered down, as bone-chilling cold overtook a massive stretch of the nation.

In certain areas, frigid temperatures were some of the most extreme on the planet. Entire communities were practically paralyzed, with glacial conditions testing the true mettle of millions.

In situations like this, certain problems become painfully apparent. For instance, what should you do when life or daily functionality depends on prescription medications, and your supply is rapidly running out?

One dedicated pharmacist in Lake Odessa, Michigan, came up with an innovative answer. It essentially amounted to a single, steadfast assertion: Have snowmobile, will travel.

Local NBC affiliate WILX-TV reports that Lake Odessa Pharmacy normally delivers its prescriptions free of charge. But those piles of snow and savagely icy temperatures created quite a snag.

Elderly area residents Wayne and Margaret Mausbach were like a lot of nearby customers. Skipping Wayne’s daily dosage could have been downright dangerous, but their car was disabled by the brutal weather.

Wayne Mausbach told WILX-TV they were “kind of snowed in.” Unfortunately, he was also quickly running out of a crucial medication.

Pharmacist Andrea Cusack understood completely. “Blood pressure, diabetes meds, you do not want to stop those. You want to take those continuously,” she said.

So when Cusack heard that the Mausbachs were temporarily homebound, she offered a novel delivery alternative.

“I said, ‘Is your driveway plowed?’ and they said, ‘No.’ So I said, ‘Oh, so I might have to bring the snowmobile?’ and they said, ‘We would recommend that,'”Cusack said.

So she and her 15-year-old son bundled up in several warm layers and set off to help.

The delivering duo rode tandem on Cusack’s snowmobile, trekking across the frozen landscape on a mission that was likely life-saving.

Cusack’s husband, Mark, shared a snowy snapshot on Facebook. “Appears we have a new addition to Lake Odessa Pharmacy’s delivery service!” read the proud caption.

But for Andrea Cusack, it was apparently all in a day’s work. “I truly care about people and want to help them, and to see the response within the community, it’s just overwhelming,” she told WSYM-TV.

It just goes to show that sometimes, guardian angels have wings. Other times, they humbly arrive wearing rugged snowmobile helmets.
