Pizzeria's Wall of Kindness Lets Customers Leave a Note and Donate a Slice to Someone In Need
A slice of pizza generally doesn’t cost much. As far as quick and cheap meals go, pizza is one of those things that doesn’t tend to break the bank.
But what happens when you have no bank? What do you do when you don’t even have as much as a single dollar bill in your pocket?
If you happen to live in the city of Winnipeg in Canada, there is one place you can go and know you’ll be fed regardless of how much you carry in your pockets.
SFC Pizzeria — located at 120 Salter Street — might appear to be just like any other quick-service establishment.
But walk inside and you’ll find something truly special and unique: a wall of colorful sticky notes with words of encouragement written on them.
The wall is part of the “Pay It Forward” program created by owners Vikas and Shivani Sanger. The idea came to them when some customers started asking for free food.
“They want free food because they are hungry, they [aren’t] even wearing proper clothes,” Vikas told CBC News.
The pizzeria and convenience store owner first moved to Canada in 2010 to study business. It was there he met his wife. In 2016, their convenience store opened, complete with a laundromat attached.
Eventually, the pizzeria was added.
As a businessman, Vikas knew he couldn’t afford to give a free slice of pizza to every person who asked for one, but he and his wife still wanted to help.
Now, any time a paying customer can donate an extra dollar toward someone else’s meal, they are given a sticky note and asked to write a note of kindness and add it to the “Pay It Forward” wall.
The notes work like coupons — someone in need can come in, take a note, and redeem it in exchange for a $1 slice of pizza or something else. Customers quickly got on board with the idea.
“We all are doing this,” Shivani told CBC News. “It’s not only us. We came up with the idea… but people are so good, people are so nice, that they want to bless each other.”
The couple is so grateful for their generous customers. “Thank you so much to everyone for supporting us in ‘Pay it Forward Program,'” SFC Pizzeria wrote on Facebook.
“Your kindness and love for community means alot for all the homeless and hungry people out there.”
This isn’t the first time a pizza place has offered meals to the hungry. A Little Caesar’s in North Dakota donates slices to the homeless at no charge. It’s amazing how something so seemingly small can have such a tremendous impact on a community.
