Pregnant Woman Screams on Bus, Seconds Later Passengers are Delivering Her Baby on Floor
It wasn’t exactly the ideal place to give birth, but a Minnesota mother is thankful for the strangers that came to her aid when she unexpectedly delivered her baby on a city bus.
Michelle Agyei, 29, was riding the bus home on Aug. 14 when the pangs of labor started. She didn’t want to make a big scene about having contractions, so just quietly labored on the bus.
“I was feeling this pain,” Agyei told WCCO-TV. “It was really painful, but I didn’t want anybody to know because there was a lot of people on the bus.”
Agyei’s baby wasn’t going to wait for his mother’s bus stop. He was ready to be born.
Unable to hide her situation any longer, Agyei told the passengers around her that her baby was coming.
“My baby just popped out and I said, ‘Something is coming!’” Agyei recalled.
Jane Mulcahy, who was seated across from Agyei, remembered how quickly the baby was born.
“She had been having contractions maybe two minutes, and then within 30 seconds, the baby was born,” Mulcahy said. “It was incredibly fast.”
Mulcahy later took off her shoelace and gave it to the new mother, who wanted it as a clamp for her son’s umbilical cord.
Agyei and her son were soon whisked away to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced both to be in good health. She named her son Andrew, who weighed in at 6 pounds, 9 ounces.
Resting from her hospital bed, Agyei extended her heartfelt gratitude to the community of strangers who rallied around her.
“I thank them for what they did for me yesterday,” Agyei said. “I really thank them.”
The bus line operation company Schmitty & Sons congratulated the mother and thanked the team of people who came to her aid.
“On behalf of Schmitty & Sons, we want to extend congratulations to the mother and family,” the company wrote in a statement. “We would also like to thank the passengers that were on-board the bus for helping as well as the driver, dispatch team and the first responders.”
“We are thankful for the positive outcome and wish the best to mom and baby.”
