Robin Williams' Son Honors Late Father by Getting Married on Actor’s Birthday

Share

July 21, 2019, would have marked Robin Williams’ 68th birthday. Even to this day, the comedian and actor is remembered for the impact he made on the world, bringing joy to so many over his lifetime.

In recent months, many fans have paid tribute to one of Williams’ most famous roles as Genie from Disney’s “Aladdin.” One particular piece of fan art went viral across social media, depicting the original blue guy next to a rendering of Will Smith’s take on the character.

“I know Genies don’t have Feet…” Smith wrote on Facebook. “But you left some Big Shoes to fill. R.I.P., Robin!”

Williams sadly died by suicide on August 11, 2014. He suffered from depression. He is survived by his children Zak, Zelda and Cody and his wife, Susan Schneider.

Robin McLaurin Williams no doubt would have been a proud grandfather.

“We are beyond thrilled he chose us to be his parents, and obviously think he’s the best, smartest, and cutest baby ever!!” Olivia June shared on Instagram.

Introducing you to my little family! My fiancé, Zak, and I were so happy to welcome baby McLaurin to the world on May 22nd. We are beyond thrilled he chose us to be his parents, and obviously think he’s the best, smartest, and cutest baby ever!! In life today, we expect everything to be live shared on social media, and many who are close to me are even just learning this news. ? We’ve kept this news private for a number of reasons, one of which is my increasing emphasis and appreciation for living life away from social media and focusing on my offline relationships, another being the challenges that face us as women startup founders. I have a lot more to say about this later, but at a high level… Becoming a mom is something I’ve always known I wanted, but as an early stage startup founder sometimes sounded impossible, not because I didn’t think I could manage it, but because I knew the extent of bias in the industry against me as a female founder and the fight to be taken seriously in building a business focused on solving social challenges for women. (Not to mention the fact that maternity leave doesn’t exist for me!) As I’m proud to have successfully built a business that doesn’t rely on Silicon Valley VCs taking women’s friendship seriously to operate and has an amazing supportive team, I’m excited to be expanding my role from global change-maker startup CEO, connecting millions of women to their best friends, to a milk factory, raising a really amazing little man who has a boss mamma. None of this would be possible without the most incredible and supportive partner a woman could ever hope for. Zak, the headline is true, you’re already and will always be, “World’s Greatest Dad!” Mickey and I are the luckiest. ? [Photos by my super talented future sister-in-law @zeldawilliams]

Now Williams’ youngest son, Cody, has also chosen to honor his dad by making July 21 an even more important date for their family.

Only daughter Zelda Williams shared why her brother and new sister-in-law, Maria Flores Williams, chose their late father’s birthday as their wedding day in a heartfelt post on Instagram.

“The 21st of July has meant many things to me over the years…” Zelda began. “…it was the day my Dad was born, and the last day I got to see him.”

Zelda went on to explain how “That last one had begun to usurp the joy of the first two in recent years… that is, until two days ago, when it became something new.”

The 21st of July has meant many things to me over the years. It’s the birthday of one of my favorite souls still on this earth, @junotemple. It’s the day Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon (as a space nerd, that’s pretty damn important). And it was the day my Dad was born, and the last day I got to see him. That last one had begun to usurp the joy of the first two in recent years… that is, until two days ago, when it became something new. On the 21st of July, 2019, it became the day I officially gained a new sister! To @mariaaafloresssswilliams and Cody, you are a light in all of our lives. I’m so grateful to have paid witness to your love over the years, to have watched you grow and care for each other in ways we should all be so lucky to experience. You were already part of the family in my eyes, but now there’s an official slip of paper somewhere that agrees! Zak, Mom and I love you both dearly, and I think I can speak for all of us when I say CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BRIDE AND GROOM!!! ?????? ♥️ Photos by @cassievalentephoto

She shared how she “gained a new sister” and called the bride and groom “a light in all of our lives.” Zelda expressed her gratitude and offered her genuine congrats to the happy couple.

July 21 will always be a reminder of everything this family has lost. But now it is also the day they will celebrate all they’ve gained.

Best wishes and congratulations, Cody and Maria! Robin Williams would undoubtedly be touched to know you chose to honor him in this way.
