Sarah Sanders Explodes on 'Shameful Dems' for Spreading Fake News on Viral Border Girl
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders blasted Democrats and the mainstream media on Friday for intentionally misleading the public with a photo of a young girl at the border.
The image of the girl crying in the photo — 2-year-old Yanela Denise — came to symbolize children separated from their parents at the border, and has been used by the media to push their immigration agenda.
Time Magazine clearly used the photo to portray President Donald Trump as uncaring and cruel, photoshopping the image to show the girl looking up at the president as he stares down at her with a smirk on his face.
“Welcome to America,” reads the cover.
There was just one problem: The girl wasn’t separated from her mother.
“Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed to CBS News the mother and daughter are being housed together at a facility in Texas and her immigration proceedings are ongoing,” CBS reported.
The little girl wasn’t crying because her mother was being taken away, she was crying because she was thirsty and exhausted from traveling from Hondorus.
“We asked her to set the kid down in front of her, not away from her, she was right in front of her…So we can properly search the mother,” explained Border Patrol agent Carlos Ruiz. “So the kid immediately started crying as she set her down. I personally went up to the mother and asked her ‘Are you doing OK? Is the kid OK?’ and she said, ‘Yes. She’s tired and thirsty. It’s 11 o’clock at night.'”
Not only did Border Patrol not separate the girl from her mother — it was the mother who separated the girl from her father.
According to the U.K. Daily Mail, the girl’s father, 32-year-old Denis Javier Varela Hernandez, says that his wife Sandra Maria Sanchez took his daughter on the dangerous journey from Honduras to reach the U.S. border on June 3 without telling him.
“My heart broke because it’s my little girl,” Hernandez said. “The first time I said that’s my little girl when I saw the report.”
None of those facts mattered to Time magazine or the other media outlets that used the photo — and Sanders called them out for it.
“It’s shameful that dems and the media exploited this photo of a little girl to push their agenda,” she tweeted. “She was not separated from her mom. The separation here is from the facts. Dems should join POTUS and fix our immigration system.”
No apologies appear to be coming from Time for the misleading magazine cover. In fact, quite the opposite:
“The June 12 photograph of the 2-year-old Honduran girl became the most visible symbol of the ongoing immigration debate in America for a reason: Under the policy enforced by the administration, prior to its reversal this week, those who crossed the border illegally were criminally prosecuted, which in turn resulted in the separation of children and parents. Our cover and our reporting capture the stakes of this moment,” the magazine said in a statement.
And somehow the mainstream media continues to wonder why the American people don’t trust them.
