Singing Nurse Has Unexpected Surprise for Trauma Patients When They See What She’s Wearing
Spending any amount of time in an emergency room, dealing with different situations and waiting for a diagnosis, is never fun.
But one nurse at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois has found a magical way to try and help make her patients more comfortable during their time in the hospital.
She’s known as the singing nurse to her colleagues and patients, but she does so much more than just sing. She trades in her hospital scrubs for princess dresses.
“I’m basically a therapy dog in a princess dress,” she jokes.
She sings to her patients to help them during their time in the hospital with more than just an actual diagnosis.
“It is so fun to see the children sparkle when I come in,” Kubis says. “I truly believe that when I am wearing the princess dress, I’m her.
“They just light up and it’s one moment where they’re not at a hospital.”
And it’s hard not to smile when you hear Kubis’ melodic voice, with her charming personality shining through in song.
Her repertoire includes more than just Disney princess songs for the children. The songs “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood and “At Last” by Etta James are also one of many song selections.
“It doesn’t take any time out of my day or delay care. But I find it’s a nice distraction from what’s going on, it lightens the moods, makes this scary place seem a little less scary in that moment and brings the make-believe back into their lives.”
Her patients send Kubis cards and flowers to show their appreciation for her time and attention.
“I treat my patients like they’re my family and I feel as though if you can open up a little bit about yourself they’re going to feel like they’re not a room number,” she says.
We are truly inspired by this nurse’s devotion to her patients. Keep singing Jodi!
