Steph Curry Wants To Make Hollywood More Family-Friendly by Bringing Faith to Film
Basketball season may be over, but NBA superstar Stephen Curry is just getting warmed up to launch his latest and greatest project.
The athlete is jumping into the arena of family-friendly film and television, and fans are eager to see what transpires.
For those less familiar with the current professional basketball landscape, Curry is widely known as the star of the Golden State Warriors.
The 30-year-old celebrity has already cemented his name as one of basketball’s greatest players, but he’s also well known for being an outspoken Christian athlete and a committed family man.
While Curry is fully committed to being the best athlete he can be, he’s also firmly committed to his marriage. Curry and his wife, Ayesha Curry, have two daughters and welcomed their first son on July 2.
In the midst of winning basketball championships and preparing for the birth of his third child, Curry announced his latest Hollywood endeavor.
In April, Curry introduced his production company, Unanimous Media, and explained his intent to dive into the entertainment business.
Curry formed the company with help from trusted partners Erick Peyton and Jeron Smith, who will help steer the fledgling company.
Unanimous Media landed on a distribution agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment, with film and television being the primary focus of the deal.
According to “Variety,” Unanimous Media and Sony productions will hone in on three primary areas: faith, family and sports.
Down the line, Curry would like to tap into video games, virtual reality and consumer products, but for now, family-friendly film is the focus.
Curry is not the first basketball star to capitalize on the entertainment industry. NBA star LeBron James co-founded his own production company, SpringHill Entertainment, in 2013.
While Curry is not looking to do much acting within his own company, he does like the idea of making a cameo appearance every now and then in future films.
He said that his natural, self-proclaimed “corniness” plays well on camera.
“I have a corniness to me, a decent sense of humor and charm when I’m in front of the camera,” Curry said. “I just can’t do voices — that’s it. I’ve got to stay away from that.”
As Unanimous Media begins to take shape, Curry plans to keep basketball as his main focus. Like all athletes, the day will come when Curry retires, and then he’ll have the chance to delve into entertainment full-time, if he wishes.
“Obviously I have a day job,” Curry said. “I have to make sure I’m the best basketball player I can be for the next however long I’m playing.”
