The Subtle Ways Princess Diana Was Honored by Her Niece, Princess Eugenie, at Her Wedding
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have tied the knot at last! Whether you watched the live stream or you are simply following the royal family on social media, you may have missed some subtle elements that paid tribute to Princess Diana.
While Eugenie was only 7 years old when Diana was killed, her mother, Sarah Ferguson, was close to the princess.
According to Town & Country, their friendship dates back to a time before either became a part of the royal family.
Because of their bond, it’s no surprise that Fergie would desire to honor her late fourth cousin and friend at Eugenie’s wedding, especially since their relationship ended on a sad note.
MamaMia reported the two had a falling out of sorts about a year before Princess Diana died. They did not make amends before it was too late.
Now it seems Diana has been remembered in more ways than one at yet another royal affair. Princess Eugenie’s dress was the first similarity we caught.
While no two royal wedding dresses are exactly alike, we also couldn’t help but notice that Eugenie’s extremely long train reminded us of the train Diana wore in her wedding to Prince Charles.
According to Elle, Diana’s dress and train were covered in lace, sequins, and pearls. Eugenie’s train was not quite so frilly, but still looked stunning as it trailed behind her.
Fans of the late princess may also have caught another hint of Diana in Eugenie’s off-shoulder, fold-over top with long sleeves.
This detail looks strikingly similar to a dress Diana wore during a visit to the Berlin Opera House in 1987. See anything familiar?
Oh, and did we mention The Daily Star reported Diana’s wedding dress designer, David Emanuel, was among the 850 guests in attendance? Coincidence? We think not!
The dress resemblances aren’t the only nod to Diana, though. Eugenie followed in Diana’s footsteps, like the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex before her, when she left a key phrase out of her vows.
According to Town & Country, Princess Diana broke the mold when she didn’t promise to “obey” her husband. The phrase has pretty much been lost at this point, though Diana is credited with being the first to leave it out.
While some outlets, such as The Sun, speculated that Diana’s favorite hymn, “I Vow To Thee My Country,” might be played during Eugenie’s ceremony, it was not.
The hymn was played at both Diana’s wedding and funeral, but it sadly didn’t make the cut for the most recent royal event.
Something, or we should say someone, else was missing as well — Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall was not in attendance due to prior engagements.
Some assumed this was due to hard feelings between Fergie and the duchess, as the former was close to Diana and the latter is Charles’ current wife.
But Town & Country squashed the idea. According to the news source, Camilla’s spokesperson said her failed attendance had nothing to do with hard feelings.

Even with the absence of the Duchess of Cornwall and Diana’s favorite hymn, Princess Eugenie’s wedding still turned out to be a beautiful and memorable affair.
We think it’s safe to assume William and Harry appreciated the subtle tributes to their mother, and we wish the bride and groom all the best in their new life together.
