Sweet Blind Dog Won't Go Anywhere Without His Best Friend To Guide Him

Share

Nobody’s perfect. The great thing about good friends is that they see our faults and frailties, and stand by our side regardless.

Sometimes we simply hog the remote or drink orange juice straight from the carton. But often, our personal quirks and challenges go quite a bit deeper than that.

Even our beloved canines can shoulder burdens that only a devoted buddy can comprehend. In the dog world, these unbreakable animal attachments result in what’s known as a “bonded pair.”

According to the World of Angus blog, any pups can decide to pair up. Size, breed, age, gender — none of these factors really stand in the way.

Two dedicated dogs just decide that doing life together is their best option. Frequently, one canine helps the other mourn a loss or confront a medical challenge.

Think about the ways seeing eye dogs assist humans, for example. Dogs can likewise use their impressive senses of hearing and smell to help a canine comrade get around more comfortably.

That certainly seems to be the case with Stevie and Jimmy, at any rate. The former is a blind shar-pei, while the latter is an elderly chihuahua.

Would you be willing to adopt a duo like this one?

Jimmy is roughly five years older than Stevie, and quite a bit more compact. But nonetheless, he spends almost every second looking after his larger little brother.

Neda Rosa, board member and volunteer for California Shar-Pei Rescue, recently spoke to The Dodo about this dynamic duo. “Jimmy is always licking (Stevie’s) eyes, and he’s always taking care of him and doesn’t want to leave his side,” she said.

Both pooches were recently picked up as strays in Southern California. They were immediately transported to Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto, but nobody stepped forward to claim them.

Soon afterward, the crew at California Shar-Pei Rescue came across a snapshot of the pair. It seemed likely these dogs had once occupied a home together, but nobody knows for sure.

“We are a breed-specific rescue, so we only rescue shar-peis,” Rosa told The Dodo. “But when we saw how bonded these two dogs were, we thought that there was absolutely no way we could leave his little friend behind.”

That’s how Steve and Jimmy came to reside at this specialized shelter. They’ll remain here until some caring adopter finds room in their heart to provide a forever family.

Sure, there are a couple challenges to bear in mind. In addition to his vision impairment, for instance, Stevie has begun having sporadic seizures — but these appear to be fully controlled with medication.

California Shar-Pei Rescue knows an unbreakable bond when they see it. And they firmly insist that these two loving pups must be taken home as a twosome.

“We have never — in our 30 years of rescue — seen a bond like these two,” Rosa told The Dodo. She explains that the doting Jimmy is virtually stuck to Stevie “like glue. He’s constantly grooming him, and he showers his face nonstop. And he just wants to be with him.”

So, are you seeking a couple of super-sweet canines to brighten your life? “It’s going to take a special person who is looking for a package deal,” Rosa says. But we all know that guardian angels are everywhere.
