Governments and authorities in the EU have long sought to phase out internal combustion engine cars in favor of electric-powered ones.

At least two people have been killed and seven others have been hurt as a result of defective ARC inflators, the agency said.

"The scope of the problem is only expanding and is exponentially worse than it has been in the past,” police chief Brian O’Hara said.

"A lot of times fire departments will just let the vehicle burn until it’s down to the point where they can actually access the batteries."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a letter that the recall includes 231,942 vehicles.

"The introduction of more weight into crashes via EVs will complicate any attempts to reduce the ongoing fatality crisis."
