As the Northeast choked under a haze of smoke last week, one source of energy proved to fail during peak times.

On Sunday, an elevated section of I-95 collapsed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after a vehicle caught on fire.

An agronomy manager noted that "smoke at any altitude has the potential to affect crop growth by reflecting and scattering incoming sunlight."

The fires are so widespread they have sent a murky haze over much of the U.S. Northeast. But what caused them?

"Anyone, regardless of health conditions, is advised to limit strenuous activity outdoors," one Philadelphia outlet reported.

Flames poured from a Massachusetts church Friday after what officials believe was a lightning strike that hit the steeple.

"I can’t pay $14,000 a month to an employee starting Jan. 1. There’s just not enough money," Western Grazers owner said.

"A lot of times fire departments will just let the vehicle burn until it’s down to the point where they can actually access the batteries."

Some burning EVs that have been put out have reignited hours later, meaning finding somewhere to store them has to be taken into account.
