Teen with Down Syndrome Bursts into Tears After Reading Best Friend's Sign
Every year between April and May, high schoolers across America are sent into a frenzy as the most important time of year approaches.
No, it isn’t graduation season just yet. It’s prom season.
As the years go by, the ways teens ask their dates to the big dance seem to have gotten more and more elaborate.
These “promposals” are often caught on camera and shared on social media, and some of the most inventive and heartwarming among them inevitably go viral.
One such promposal has already made its way across the globe and straight into our hearts nearly overnight.
In a video posted to Twitter, a North Carolina teen named Ben Robinson, who has Down Syndrome, is seen walking into the school auditorium.
The song “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” can be heard playing in the background as he makes his way down the aisle.
As he continues toward the stage, Ben’s classmates begin handing him flowers.
While he is still unsure what is going on, Ben can’t help but smile as his collection of flowers continues to grow.
Soon, the camera focuses on the stage. The curtains open to six girls standing with signs that read “Will you go to prom with…”
Just as Ben realizes what is happening, his best friend Rachel Newberry runs out from backstage with the final sign and a flower, asking, “Ben, will you go to prom with me?”
“Yes!” Ben shouted back before covering his face as he burst into tears.
“We’re going to dance all night. It’s going to be the best prom ever. Are you excited?” Rachel asked.
Ben still couldn’t believe it, looking around the room asking if it was all for him.
“I did this all, just for you,” Rachel said, which only made Ben even more emotional.
“Oh my gosh!” he responded, breaking down in tears again as Rachel gave him a big hug.
After the sweet promposal went viral, Rachel took to Twitter to explain how much Ben means to her.
“Ben is so incredibly loved in the community that we live in,” she said. “Never in my life did I think asking my childhood best friend to prom would amount to something like this. I am speechless.”
