The Real Reason the Amish Don't Grow Mustaches
There’s a surprising reason why Amish men grow beards but shave their mustaches.
According to YouTube channel Today I Found Out, the tradition goes all the way back to Europe, where those in the military were once required to wear mustaches.
Because the Amish are pacifists and believe war is unjustifiable, they did not grow mustaches so as not to be associated with the military.
Curiosity reported that this tradition all began in 17th century, when mustaches became a requirement for British soldiers.
While Amish men shave their mustaches, it is extremely common for Amish men to have beards.
However, only men who are married are allowed to grow their beard as a symbol of coming into adulthood.
Why is this? Amish folks belong to an offshoot of the Mennonite religion.
According to The Culture Trip, Amish men point back to one of two Bible verses as reasons why they grow a beard. In the Bible, many of the men are described as having beards, so the Amish follow suit.
Amish men also do not wear wedding bands, so their facial hair is the only outward symbol of their marriage vows.
Leviticus 19:27 states: “Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.”
Likewise, Psalm 133: 1-2 reads: “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard!”
Amish men take these verses seriously.
As a result, their beards are a symbol of their loyalty to God.
What an incredible way to show their love and devotion to God and family.
The Amish hold many other beautiful traditions that revolve around a deep faith for God, simplicity, humility and love for family.
