Tom Brady abruptly ends interview after comments about his 5-year-old daughter
For obvious reasons, Tom Brady is pretty much untouchable when it comes to criticism in Massachusetts.
Even when an ESPN article came out a few weeks ago claiming that Brady essentially forced the Patriots to trade backup Jimmy Garapolo, New England fans shrugged their shoulders and watched the team march to another Super Bowl.
So going on sports radio to take a pot shot at Brady’s five-year old daughter isn’t a smart move.
The quarterback does a paid radio apperance every Monday during the season on WEEI’s “Kirk and Callahan Show” in Boston. Usually, he and the hosts will talk about that week’s game, topics around the NFL, or whatever comes to mind.
But this Monday, Brady was clearly miffed, and he wasn’t going to take it any more.
WEEI host Alex Reimer — who does not host Brady’s interview — was on the air Friday, discussing Brady’s “Tom vs. Time” documentary, which includes scenes from Brady’s home life. In discussing his thoughts about the documentary, Reimer made a comment in which he called Brady’s 5-year-old daughter “an annoying little pissant.”
That was enough for her father.
“I’ve tried to come on this show for many years and showed you guys a lot of respect,” Brady said. “I’ve always tried and come on and do a good job for you guys. It’s very disappointing when you hear [the comments about my daughter], certainly. My daughter, or any child, certainly don’t deserve that.”
Kirk Minihane is the normally acerbic cohost of the show, but he empathized with Brady, saying he had also criticized Reimer for making such comments.
Brady also implied that Reimer’s actions may have jeopardized the station’s future relationship with the quarterback.
“I’ll obviously evaluate whether I want to come on this show again,” Brady said.
The interview segment usually runs anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes, but No. 12 was in no mood to chat.
“I really don’t have much to say this morning. Maybe I’ll speak with you guys some other time,” he said before ending the interview.
The hosts, while likely disappointed, said they understood.
Minihane revealed that Reimer has been suspended for this week because of his comment.
Perhaps this will once and for all show that making outrageous statements just to elicit a reaction is not good radio.
