USA Rallies Together in Last Ditch Effort to Save Toys 'R' Us - $200 Million Raised on GoFundMe
The deeper we delve into technology, the more “brick and mortar” stores seem to become irrelevant. Who needs a day-long shopping trip when you can find everything including the kitchen sink on sites such as Amazon, along with all the rebates you desire through Ebates?
In recent news, the long beloved Toys ‘R’ Us store chain announced its doors would soon be closing.
Posts have sprung up across social media featuring consumers sharing their sadness over the toy store’s end, as well as their joy over the highly discounted items they’ve come away with.
As a kid I remember how exciting was to take a trip to the “toys only” store. Nowadays, with heavy discounts available elsewhere, most parents choose a less expensive alternative when it comes to children’s gifts.
But one man is refusing to give up on Toys ‘R’ Us. Isaac Larian, possibly most well known for manufacturing the Bratz dolls, started a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $1 billion in hopes that the toy store chain would be saved.
“If there is no Toys ‘R’ Us,” Larian said, “I don’t think there is a toy business.” As chief executive of the private toy and entertainment company, MGA Entertainment Inc., Larian’s love for toys comes as no surprise.
Of course, no one does anything unless it’s of benefit to them. Larian is no different as he’s taking the opportunity to promote his own toys through the campaign.
Still, you can’t hold too much against the man as his #SaveToysRUs campaign has already received promises from investors for over $2 million in funds. Smaller pledges have been made as well, with consumers donating lesser amounts to aid Larian’s effort.
“You can be a part of this historic movement to #SaveToysRUs by donating today!” the GoFundMe page reads. “Your donation will help to ensure that generations to come can ‘always be a Toys’R’Us kid’ and save employee jobs that are at stake should the company cease operation.”
Donation reward levels include smaller items like a bumper sticker or pin for lesser amounts. For those who wish to invest heavily, rewards like a block party and tour of the Little Tikes factory will entice any kid at heart.
“It’s just sad that.. you can’t walk through a store and buy… just toys,” one consumer noted in the above interview. “I like to feel what I’m buying, I like to touch it, I like to look at it,” another said.
Now, thanks to Larian, these consumers’ hopes may not be completely dashed after all. If you’re always and forever a Toys ‘R’ Us kid, you can donate to the fundraiser until Memorial Day, March 28, 2018.
