Viral Post Saves Mother's Job While Son in Hospital on Life Support

Share

I am not usually an advocate of spilling personal details on Facebook for all to see. Some things should remain private.

Then again, social media does have its uses. In the case of a single mom from Albion, Michigan, a viral post regarding poor treatment from a manager ended up saving her job.

It happened so quickly. Crystal Fisher’s son Jason, 18, went from standing on his own two feet to needing life-support at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

As any mother would be, Fisher is fully focused on finding answers for her son. For now, Jason’s diagnosis is cellulitis sepsis.

But this guess has provided little in the way of comfort. Fisher is waiting to find out more about her son’s condition and what may have caused it.

She has remained responsible, filling her PS Food Mart boss in on the situation. But a series of tension-filled texts made it clear her manager was not willing to accommodate Fisher’s need for time off.

Do you think the manager was justified in her response?

The manager, Dawn, showed irritation rather than kindness and compassion. Instead of expressing empathy, Dawn became more than a little hostile in her responses.

“There’s no reason you can’t work and I will not tolerate drama,” Dawn wrote. “End of conversation.”

Ouch. What a way to treat a person who’s undergone such an ordeal. One has to wonder if she’d want to be treated the same way, Dawn was in Fisher’s shoes.

Of course, everyone should be given the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps Dawn is dealing with her own “drama.” Maybe the PS Food Mart was short-staffed, and the manager felt overwhelmed without Fisher’s help.

Still, such frustrations should be taken up with the company in a professional manner. They should not be dumped on an employee whose child is on life-support.

Since Fisher’s screenshots were posted publicly on her page, they’ve been shared by hundreds. PS Food Mart even stepped in.

“We appreciate the concern that has been expressed in support of our employee,” the Folk Oil Company wrote on the PS Food Mart page. “We will move quickly to get all the facts and take action on what we find.”

Following their investigation, the company has since released Dawn from her position at the food mart. She was unwilling to make a comment or a statement to local media.

“I pray for you, I pray for you. That’s all I can say,” Fisher said when asked what she would tell Dawn.

Her comment makes it clear that posting the text messages to Facebook was never about slandering her boss. Fisher obviously felt helpless with her son on life-support and the idea of no job to return to.

But Fisher’s job is safe now. She is thankful for the support of PS Food Mart and has no resentment for the Folk Oil Company based on her former boss’ actions.
