Watch: 10-Year-Old Dog's Reaction When He Finds out He's Going Home after 4 Years
The term “Dreadlock” refers to rope-like strands of hair produced by specific braiding or matting techniques. When people hear the word, many instantly picture sun-dappled beaches and the happy, carefree cadence of reggae music.
But for one elderly canine named Dreadlock, life had been anything but carefree and happy. At ten years of age, he’d spent nearly half of his existence in a shelter.
Dreadlock earned his name based upon his appearance when he first arrived at the Soi Dog Foundation in Thailand.
He came to the shelter neglected and forgotten, with severe skin issues and a filthy coat that was gnarled and horrendously matted.
Soi Dog Foundation is located in Phuket, Thailand. According to its Facebook page, it’s a legally registered non-profit charitable organization in seven countries.
Like many animal shelters, Soi Dog Foundation was established to help thousands of free-roaming street dogs and cats who have nobody else in their corner.
In other words, the organization exists to assist abandoned pets exactly like Dreadlock.
When this ragtag canine first arrived at the facility, nobody could have predicted that he was there to stay for the next four years. But sadly, that’s exactly how things transpired.
It certainly wasn’t for lack of a lovable personality. Staff at the shelter described Dreadlock as an easygoing older gent who adored daily walks and companionable cuddles.
Unfortunately, the simple truth is that older dogs are sometimes overlooked by loving adopters.
Some folks simply have their hearts set on a puppy; while others may assume an older dog automatically means more work.
But one volunteer named Darren saw beyond these regrettable stereotypes. He only saw Dreadlock’s handsomely speckled coat and winning personality.
So after some consideration, Darren decided to give this dapper old guy a permanent place in his home. He sat down for a little heart-to-heart with Dreadlock, explaining that this lucky pup would soon be part of a forever family in the UK.
And to the delight of dog lovers all across social media, Dreadlock went charmingly, boisterously bonkers.
He barked, and hopped, and twirled, and ran, and danced, and eagerly wagged his tail — even playing some impromptu peek-a-boo in his unrestrained excitement.
It seems that even a placid pooch like Dreadlock can experience overwhelming joy, thanks to the power of unconditional love. A worthwhile lesson for anyone seeking to make this world a happier place.
