Watch: Capitals Lose a Heartbreaker After Incredible Buzzer-Beater Goal

You don’t often see buzzer-beaters in the NHL, but when you do, there’s nothing more exciting — or deflating, as the fans in Washington found out Tuesday.

San Jose Sharks left winger Evander Kane scored a goal against the Capitals with just one second left in the third period to tie the score at 6-6 and send the game into overtime.

Tomas Hertl then scored two minutes into overtime to give visiting San Jose a thrilling and improbable 7-6 win at Capital One Arena.

Kane’s game-tying goal came in a wild sequence in the final seconds. Teammate Joe Pavelski fired a shot from the left boards with two seconds left. It somehow got through a scrum of Sharks and Capitals and landed on the stick of Kane, who was parked right in front of the goal.

Kane caught it on the fly and flipped it past Capitals goalie Braden Holtby for the equalizer.

The slow-motion replay shows that it crossed the line with exactly one tick of the clock left.

The Sharks had trailed 6-4 in the third period but battled back as Hertl scored with about 10 minutes left in the third to make it 6-5 before Kane’s buzzer-beater.

Is this the year the Sharks win their first Stanley Cup?

“I just wanted to forecheck the puck hard and try to get to the front of the net somehow,” Kane told the San Jose Mercury News. “Desperate attempt. Just found its way to the backdoor.”

Hertl scored again, his third goal of the game, just two minutes into overtime to give the Sharks the win. Kane had two goals for the Sharks.

Alex Ovechkin had a hat trick for the Capitals.

The Sharks improved to 29-16-7. With 65 points, they are second in the Pacific Division behind Calgary, which has 71 points.

The Capitals lost their sixth straight game.

The defending Stanley Cup Champions stand at 27-16-6. They are stuck at 60 points and have fallen behind the Islanders in the Metropolitan Division.
