Watch: Insane diving MLB catch so impressive that it got standing ovation
Blue Jays right fielder Randal Grichuk made a circus catch in the first inning of Sunday’s game against the Rangers, literally catching the ball with his eyes closed.
Look what I found.
With one out and leadoff hitter Delino DeShields at second, the Rangers Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a soft line drive to right field that had Grichuk charging hard.
Grichuk seemed to have a bead on it, but as he dove to make the catch, his right knee landed wrong on the turf and it jolted his landing.
As he dove for the ball, the impact of the landing appeared to cause him to momentarily close his eyes, at the exact instant that ball was coming at him.
The line drive hit the heel of his glove and bounced off his abdomen.
Incredibly, Grichuk managed to cradle it against his body and get it back into his glove for the catch.
Then he calmly got to his feet and fired to second to nail DeShields for the double play to end the inning.
That got the home crowd out of their seats.
According to MLB Statcast, Grichuk traveled 58 feet in four seconds to make the grab.
Perhaps it gave the Blue Jays an early spark as they went on to beat the Rangers 7-2.
