Watch Jim Jordan Corner Cohen on WH Aspirations, Then Trump Boys Finish Him Off

Share

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan struck a nerve with President Donald Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen on Wednesday by pointing out Cohen’s failed White House aspirations.

Jordan’s brutal questioning happened during Cohen’s testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

After serving as Trump’s personal attorney for over 10 years, Cohen broke with the president last year after the FBI began investigating the attorney for tax fraud.

At Wednesday’s hearing, Cohen reiterated previous allegations against Trump, including alleged collusion with Wikileaks.

“A lot of people have asked me about whether Mr. Trump knew about the release of the hacked Democratic National Committee emails ahead of time,” Cohen said in a prepared statement. “The answer is yes.”

But Trump said Cohen is lying in order to reduce his prison time for crimes mostly unrelated to the president, such as tax fraud.

It’s also worth noting that Cohen has already admitted lying to Congress about a planned Trump Tower project in Moscow.

In a Twitter post Wednesday, Trump disparaged any testimony Cohen might give to Congress, saying Cohen is only trying to get a better deal for himself. He also alluded to Cohen’s lawyer being Lanny Davis, a veteran Democratic strategist with close ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

“Michael Cohen was one of many lawyers who represented me (unfortunately). He had other clients also. He was just disbarred by the State Supreme Court for lying & fraud. He did bad things unrelated to Trump. He is lying in order to reduce his prison time. Using Crooked’s lawyer!” Trump tweeted.

And Jordan, the top Republican on the Oversight Committee, had his own theory for Cohen’s allegations.

“Mr. Cohen, how long did you work in the White House?” Jordan questioned.

“I never worked in the White House,” Cohen replied.

“That’s the point, isn’t it, Mr. Cohen?”

Do you agree with Jim Jordan's theory?

“No, sir.”

“You wanted to work in the White House, and you didn’t get invited to the dance,” Jordan said, before comparing Cohen to former FBI Director James Comey and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. Both men, of course, are fierce public critics of Trump.

“Now you’re behaving just like everyone else who got fired or didn’t get the job they wanted, like Andy McCabe, like James Comey. Same kind of selfish motivation after you don’t get the thing you want,” Jordan said.

“That’s what I see here today and I think that’s what the American people see.”

In Twitter posts, the president’s sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump took their own shots at Cohen.

“Hahahaha Michael Cohen begged to work at the White House and everyone knows it,” Donald Trump Jr. tweeted.

“Michael was lobbying EVERYONE to be ‘Chief of Staff.’ It was the biggest joke in the campaign and around the office. Did he just perjure himself again?” Eric Trump chimed in.

Everything Cohen said during Wednesday’s hearing should be taken with a grain of salt.

He’s clearly got an incentive to try to lower his own prison sentence, he’s already admitted to lying to Congress and he may well have had an ax to grind over not being hired at the White House after Trump won the presidency against all odds back in 2016.

Thanks to Jordan’s questioning, America has heard about that last part now. And the Trump sons’ tweets are making sure the word goes far and wide.
