Watch Moment Soldier Comes Face to Face with Dog He Saved Overseas as Tiny Puppy
Everyone loves a good reunion story, and pets being reunited with their people are some of the best ones out there.
Have you caught the trailer for “A Dog’s Way Home” yet? The film hits theaters Jan. 11, 2019, and comes from the same author who wrote “A Dog’s Purpose.”
Dare I say this tale looks as if it could rival “Homeward Bound,” one of the best dog (and cat) movies ever? I got teary-eyed just watching the trailer.
Another “homeward bound” journey may also leave you reaching for the tissues when you hear how one soldier and his dog met, fell in love and found their way back to one another after months apart.
Sean Laidlaw met “Barrie” when she was just a pup in Syria. The 30-year-old was working as a bomb disposal expert when he found the Asian Shepherd mix in some rubble, the Daily Mail reported.
The two immediately bonded and became inseparable. They spent time together traveling to other countries and war zones.
All the while, Laidlaw served as a corporal in the British Army’s Royal Engineers, and his faithful canine remained by his side, according to The Telegraph.
“Working in a war zone, coming back to camp, you sit in your room on your own,” he said. “To have a companion you can play with and train, it kept my mind away from all the things I was seeing and doing out there.”
The corporal also shared how Barrie helped with PTSD. “A dog always makes you happy, always wants to be with you,” he explained.
When Laidlaw and his best friend were separated in April 2018 during his brief trip to the U.K., the corporal learned his contract was canceled.
The soldier was then left with the task of bringing Barrie home where she belonged. With the help of War Paws and a GoFundMe campaign, Laidlaw and his dog were reunited on Nov. 3 after several months apart.
Watch their heartwarming story. These two clearly belong together. I’ve never seen a pair quite like them before.
“One of my biggest fears was that she wouldn’t recognize who I was, or that she would be a different dog to the girl I left,” Laidlaw said.
He said he felt “pure joy” when it became clear Barrie hadn’t forgotten who saved her. We’re so glad they could be reunited, and just in time for the holidays, too!
