Watch Plane Covered in Lights Put on Magical Christmas Display
Quite a few people travel for the holidays. This time of year, airports can be a miserable place. Lines are longer and flights are delayed due to poor weather.
One airport in London decided to make things a bit brighter for their staff and their families. The local children from two schools were even invited.
According to INSIDER, the ground staff at Luton Airport worked together to create a Christmas light spectacular.
When you see it, you might agree this unique display is brilliant enough to rival Disney’s classic Electrical Parade itself.
Consisting of 1.5 miles of Christmas lights in all colors, the display centered on an easyJet Airbus A320 aircraft with an airplane hangar as the stage.
“As we reach the end of our redevelopment — the largest in the airport’s 80-year history — we wanted to extend a huge thank you to staff and customers and give them a special Christmas gift,” Neil Thompson, the airport’s operations director, told Independent.
Projections and a symphony of lights danced to a modern-day remix of Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy — made famous by the beloved Christmas classic “The Nutcracker.”
Children and their families appeared dazzled as they looked on in wonder during the show. And it turns out the work behind the display was just as much of a treat as the display itself.
“Most people who work in a regular office get to partake in festive decorating,” the director of cabin services, Tina Milton, told Independent.
“So we laid down the challenge to [the] ground crew to create the most spectacular light show featuring a plane.”
As it turns out, this is the first and only show of its kind (so far), and more than 850,000 choreographed light sequences were put into effect.
The project reportedly took a total of 4 weeks for special effects artists and lighting designers to complete. The ground team only had 24 hours to transform the hangar into a festive venue before the show took place.
With the help of 9-year-old Maddy Simonite, the lights brightened the night. “Switching on the lights made me feel like I started Christmas!” she said according to Lonely Planet.
What an astounding display and wonderful way to celebrate Luton Airport’s 80 long years. Maybe this will inspire other airports around the world to put on something similar. This is certainly a show I would love to see up close.
