WNBA's new program will help fund Planned Parenthood
The WNBA has announced a new “women and girls empowerment program” for the 2018 season that will help fund Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the nation.
In a Wednesday news release, the league said the program, which is called “Take a Seat, Take a Stand,” will support six organizations “that are changing the game for women and girls,” including Planned Parenthood.
Every time a fan purchases a ticket for a WNBA game, the league will donate $5 to one of those six organizations, which also include The United State of Women, It’s On Us, the gay advocacy group GLSEN, Bright Pink and MENTOR. All of those organizations tend to lean left on the political spectrum, Breitbart reported.
For each ticket bought, the WNBA will also “send a young woman or girl” to a game, the news release said.
“For 22 years, the WNBA and its players — women playing at the highest level of their sport — have stood up as role models for millions of women and girls,” WNBA President Lisa Borders said in a statement.
“With ‘Take a Seat, Take a Stand,’ we are proud to come together as a league to stand with our partner organizations, our fans and the many inspiring women raising their voices for change in the current women’s movement.”
In a video posted to its Twitter account, the WNBA emphasized that it stands for women’s empowerment.
“This season, your tickets support more than women’s basketball,” the video noted. “It supports women.”
In a statement, Planned Parenthood expressed its gratitude.
“We’re so grateful the WNBA is standing up for the 2.4 million patients who rely on Planned Parenthood and supporting issues that affect the health, well-being, and success of women and girls,” said Dawn Laguens, the executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
“Players have used their platforms to bring attention to inequality and, through ‘Take a Seat, Take a Stand,’ the WNBA is giving fans an opportunity to join them in the fight for social change,” she added.
It’s not the first time the WNBA has partnered with Planned Parenthood.
Last July, the Seattle Storm hosted a “Stand With Planned Parenthood” night to raise money for the abortion provider.
On Friday, after The New York Times reported on the Trump administration’s plans to take away federal funding from organizations that provide abortions — like Planned Parenthood — the WNBA released a statement of support for the abortion giant.
“The WNBA stands with Planned Parenthood against the Trump Administration’s most recent attack on women’s rights to affordable, safe, and comprehensive healthcare,” the WNBA said. “Planned Parenthood provides essential services for families and communities across the country and to support their critical work is to support all women.”
