Woman Who Spends Hundreds from Own Pocket Each Week To Feed Homeless Surprised by Steve Harvey
In Matthew chapter 25, Jesus tells his disciples, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat … whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
This is the standard one woman from San Diego, California, lives by. Debra Davis, known as Auntie Debra to those who are close, is one of a kind.
Rather than volunteering at a soup kitchen or shelter, this amazing woman has taken it upon herself to make a big difference in her community.
Davis works in the cafeteria at Hoover High School. She serves her students with pride and a smile, but every day she takes her cooking skills beyond the campus grounds.
“I get up (at) 3:30 in the morning and I prepare the food and everything and I put it in the car … I go to work, and then when I get off of work I go feed the homeless from say 1 o’clock to like 6 o’clock,” she told Steve Harvey.
From her big heart and her own pocket she does this, seeking no reward but her “reward in Heaven,” she told CBS News in June 2018 when a group of auto shop students refurbished a car for her.
Before that, Davis was driving a ’76 Chevy Malibu as her way of transportation to deliver the food she makes for her local communities. Now she’s delivering in style in her 2014 Mazda3.
Her selfless giving has invited some much-needed attention. From there, the attention snowballed, raising over $27K as of Tuesday afternoon through a GoFundMe campaign to landing her an interview with Steve Harvey.
She does whatever she can, even collecting cans and bottles for recycling just to fund her cause. “The Bible says if I love the Lord, I’ll feed His people,” Davis told Harvey. “So I’m just doing what the Lord asked me to do. I’m just a servant.”
To thank her for her service to the community, Steve Harvey, along with Sam’s Club, surprised Davis with a check for $5,000. Watch as she accepts the gift with tears in her eyes.
“We already know you’re going to do the right thing with it,” Harvey said as he presented Davis with the generous check.
Wow! What a wonderful woman with a heart of gold. We all have an Auntie Debra in us somewhere. The question is, will we answer the call, as Harvey says? The choice is up to you.
