World Series Champ Hits the 10-Day IL After Injury Caused by 2-Year-Old Son
Boston Red Sox infielder Brock Holt has not gotten off to a great start this year, much like his team.
Holt has started five games and appeared in six overall through the first 10 games of the Red Sox season so far. The defending World Series champions are 2-8 and have the worst record in the American League.
In those six games, Holt has just one hit in 16 at-bats for a batting average of .063.
Something is definitely not right for the lifetime .263 hitter.
As it so happened, Holt injured his eye on the morning of Opening day, march 28, against the Seattle mariners. He scratched his cornea and it affected his eyesight and his ability to hit.
So, the Sox announced Saturday that Holt would be placed on the 10-day injured list to recover from the scratched cornea.

Reporters asked Holt on Saturday how he injured his eye and the response is not one you’d expect.
“It was actually a play at the hotel,” Holt said, according to Boston.com. “It was the morning of Opening Day. I went and got Griff up out of bed, and was bringing him back to our bed, and one of his fingernails got me good.”
Griff, or Griffin, is Holt’s 2-year-old son.

Holt said he tried to play through it. The first two games he had trouble keeping his right eye open regularly and wore sunglasses inside, Boston.com reported.
An eye doctor put in a protective contact lens, but that irritated his eye and made it water.
Eventually, he realized he was not helping the team by trying to play though it, so the team decided to put him on the 10-day injured list to give it time to recover.

“It’s not funny, but it is funny,” Holt said, per Boston.com. “(Griffin) walks around and tells everyone he poked me in the eye.”
Holt is not the first baseball player to suffer a weird and unusual injury, and he won’t be the last.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox dropped to 2-8 on Saturday after a 5-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. They look to avoid the sweep when they play the D-Backs Sunday at 4:10 ET.
