'Grandpa' Babysits Daughter's Dog, Hilarious Updates He Texts to Daughter Go Viral

For a lot of people, dogs are family. We joke about them being children with fur, but we only joke because we know it’s true.

My mom has a little, scruffy scrap-of-a-dog that we affectionately refer to as “fifthchild.” My dog named Chloe is a “granddogger” to my parents.

It’s just what happens when you’re part of an animal-loving family. The first question when they see you isn’t “How are you doing?” but “How’s the pup?”

Meghan Specksgoor may have known her family was like this, but she recently got undeniable proof of it.

Meghan lives in Midlothian, Virginia, and has a large shepherd mix named Chance. He looks like the typical shepherd mix: happy and affable.

But he’s also very, very spoiled by none other than Meghan’s father Larry, and Chance’s acting “Grandpa.”

Recently, Meghan was planning a trip to New York. Fortunately, her dad was more than happy to watch Chance while she was away.

But he didn’t just watch Chance. He didn’t go through the motions of feeding him and taking him out to use the bathroom, keeping his involvement perfunctory and formal.

No, Larry made sure that Chance really enjoyed his time — and we think Larry really enjoyed his time as well.

Meghan started receiving texts from her dad. Well. Texts from Chance, sent by her dad.

Larry sent a photo of Chance lying on the back seat of the car. It was followed by a short plea: “Grandpa wants to know what kind of take out I can have? we are starving.”

Another photo showed the dog sitting happily on top of a picnic table, enjoying a day at the park. And he kept his mom updated.

“Hi mom, it’s me again. We had a picnic and are going to the nail salon now. Gramps said if I’m good I can have ice cream when I’m done. What kind do I like again?”

Obviously, the next image was of Chance sitting next to a cup of frozen yogurt (sugar-free, of course), his tongue lolling and his mouth turned up in a doggy smile.

The last image was of Chance on the bed, and his final message was “Hey mom, gramps is going to sleep with me tonight, is there anything we need to tell him? Hope you are having as much fun as I am.”

Other than the fact that this is all ridiculously adorable, we know three things: Chance is a very lucky dog, Larry has already chosen the term “Gramps,” and someone — as Meghan so aptly pointed out — needs to get this man a grandchild stat.
